Tavern, Pendulum and Study Wall ClocksTavern, Pendulum and Study Wall Clocks

In this section of the catalogue you will find four different types of clock.

The tavern clock probably first appeared around 1720. It was supposed to have acquired the name "Act of Parliament Clock" in 1797 when William Pitt the younger introduced a tax on clocks and watches making large public clocks in taverns more necessary to those unable to afford to keep a house clock or pocket watch any longer. The resulting loss of business and hardship caused to clockmakers forced Pitt to repeal the Act after just one year.
